Sleepaway Camp is a want to be cult classic horror movie from 1983. It is possibly one of the worst horror movies – and movies in general – that I’ve ever had the pleasure of viewing. It’s horrible, and enjoyed it. Sleepaway Camp takes the plot right out of Friday The 13th, amps up the swearing and the hidden homoeroticism and provides some of the most laughable acting, dialogue, plot and deaths I’ve ever seen. This is not a good movie by any means, and this is far gone being a guility pleasure but you have to be a fan and open to any type of horror movie, even the astonishingly cheesy ones such as this.
I was ready to write this movie off until the ending which has left me a little speechless. It isn’t a mind twisting ending like Inception and it doesn’t leave you breathless like this original Halloween, it has you laughing, scratching your head and questioning your judgement of this film. I would recommend seeing this film for the ending alone because it is so, so worth it. It’s so messed up, so unexplainable. The film is at a very short running time, just around 80 minutes. It’s not very scary but it’s so enjoyable, so campy (no pun intended) that you just have to give up trying to make sense out of not plausible deaths and just enjoy it for whatever its worth.
