A while ago, they had announced plans to remake Scarface (which, for the bros out there, the Scarface with Al Pacino is a remake, so, this isn’t too sacrilegious). I had completely forgotten this was even happening until this morning when it was reported that Harry Potter 5-8 helmer, David Yates, is in talks to direct. I love Yates, I think he’s extremely talented – fanboy aside – and though I don’t know if he is right for the job, I think this could be good. I also think this is completely unnecessary.
I don’t have an issue with remakes. I think, if it’s the right movie, it can work. I use this example a lot but the Fright Night remake is a really great example of a remake that is a) welcomed b) improves upon the original. As I always say, for a remake to succeed and prove it’s existence, it needs to offer us something different and improve upon what may have not really worked the first time around. This also applies to the Evil Dead remake. I love the original Fright Night, but the remake did a great job of being it’s own movie and respecting the original. But the original Fright Night is no Scarface. Remaking Scarface is like remaking Halloween. Oh wait – remember when that happened? It’s just kind of unnecessary. I’m not one of those Scarface fanboys so this isn’t offensive to me, but I don’t know what else you can say with this one that Al Pacino didn’t do with the 1983 version. I don’t really see, or want to see, anyone else as Tony Montana.
If they ever remake Scream, I think I’ll have a heart-attack.
